Formed by bassist Mark Beazley in 1998, Rothko’s debut album, A Negative For Francis, was released in 1999 on Jon Tye’s Lo Recordings label, the original line up of the group going on to release 2 more albums on Lo and a mini album, In The Pulse Of An Artery, on Simon Raymonde’s Bella Union, and along the way releasing singles and EP’s on Fierce Panda, Livid Meerkat, Narwhal and Foundry Records
On disbanding the original line up in 2000, Mark went on to collaborate on two releases, again on Lo, with Susumu Yokota; the Waters Edge 12” EP and the Distant Sounds Of Summer album, before being signed to Too Pure in 2001, releasing the album A Continual Search For Origins, enlisting the help of the musicians from the band Delicate AWOL.
Upon leaving Too Pure, Mark started his own label, Trace Recordings, and has been releasing his music on the label ever since, the first being Wish For A World Without Hurt, a collaboration with Washington DC based electronic sound artist James Adams aka BLK w/Bear.
Since 2003, the group has consisted of an ever evolving band of musicians and artists, including Graham Dowdall aka Gagarin, Johny Brown [of Band Of Holy Joy] original Rothko member Crawford Blair, Michael Donnelly, Steve Parry, Tom Page, Ben Page, James Stephen Finn [Band Of Holy Joy], Inga Tillere and Sukie Smith.
Mark continues to record and release his music on Trace Recordings, with 2018’s Blood Demands More Blood receiving widespread critical acclaim.
